Luke 4:14-21 - The eyes of all were fixed on Him

Luke 4:14-21

14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.

He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

21 Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

"The Eyes of all were fixed on Him!"

What can we take from today's Gospel?

  • Jesus joins his fellow citizens in prayers and worship

As a member of a congregation, Jesus knows that He has to partake in the devotional worship with his family, friends and neighbors in God's house. He has to sustain and encourage them in matters of faith and shared daily principles. Psalm 5:7, “But I, by your great love, can come into your house; in reverence I bow down toward your holy temple.“

  • He stood, opened the book and started to read

Jesus is giving us a sign that “reading the book" is a source and a reference for our life. Let’s take a few minutes to read, understand, meditate and pray on a brief text of the Gospel to create a positive energy for each day.

  • The Spirit of God is upon me

If you are baptized, you have received the Holy Spirit. We can renew our awareness of being a member in the body of Christ and of His Presence when we worship as a congregation that has a mission to perform.

  • All the Eyes were upon Him

It is easy to fix our eyes and ears upon the altar and the presiding celebrant in the church. Do they remain fixed so after our worship? Do we see with His eyes as we deal with others, all others?

  • Today, this was fulfilled

Let our Christian commitments be lived today, be inspired by the Holy Spirit and in the presence of Jesus. It is much better to see Jesus present in our neighbors, in every human being.

May our eyes remain fixed on Him!
