Why is the phrase “Son of Man” used to denote Christ?

One of expectations of Israel was that the Messiah would be a descendant of David, and come exclusively for the Jewish nation. That is why they called him the “Son of David.” The Jewish expectations were that he would be born in the town where David was born (Bethlehem) and be from David’s lineage. Most importantly, the Messiah was to restore David’s kingdom. This is why the disciples asked him on the day of the Ascension, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6) But Jesus did not preach an earthly kingdom nor come for only one nation. His kingdom is a spiritual kingdom and all nations are invited. That is why he spoke of himself as the “Son of Man,” the Universal Savior for all mankind.
